The London Apollo Club, Reggae and the Afro-Caribbean Community
In 1969 the London Apollo Club was created on the ground floor of the building. Despite some local resistance it became a treasured venue created by and for the local Afro -Caribbean community. For over 50 years it provided a sanctuary space for music, cultural activism and solidarity (which continues at the Brent Black Music Co-operative next door) and welcomed legendary international reggae artists including John Holt, Elton Ellis, and Gregory Isaacs. It’s testified that Bob Marley played the venue on his first visit to the UK. The Apollo Club prevailed until the pandemic lockdown of 2020, but currently is closed.
